Stop Asking Whether It Was Made by AI The better question is: What did the human contribute?

Recently, I came across a reflection by Dr. Ahmed Omar Hawsawi that immediately connected with a series of articles I have been writing about AI, authorship and authenticity. He described a situation that I suspect many of us are beginning to encounter. Someone presents an impressive presentation. It is clear, beautifully structured and professionally designed. Then comes the comment: “Obviously this was made by AI.” And sometimes there is an unspoken second sentence: “Therefore, it is somehow less valuable.” That is where I think our conversation about artificial intelligence has taken a wrong turn. Because increasingly, “This is AI” is being used not as a description of a tool, but as a criticism of the person who used it. We Are Judging the Tool Instead of the Work Imagine that employee presenting the slides. Perhaps AI created the visual layout. Perhaps it reorganized the bullet points. Perhaps it summariz...

The Watermark Changes Nothing: AI Is Still a Tool,Not the Author Revisiting Generative AI: A Tool, Not a Shameful Shortcut in the age of AI provenance

In January 2025, I published an article titled Generative AI: A Tool, Not a Shameful Shortcut . My argument was straightforward: using generative AI to help articulate an idea should not automatically diminish the value of that idea. Writers have always worked with tools, editors, researchers, dictionaries, search engines, spell-checkers, designers and collaborators. Generative AI was becoming another member of that long list albeit a remarkably powerful one. A year and a half later, that argument is being tested in a way I did not fully anticipate. AI-generated content is beginning to acquire something resembling a digital fingerprint. Anthropic has introduced machine-readable marking for supported Claude-generated content as part of its response to the European Union’s new AI transparency requirements. New supported Claude models can embed an imperceptible watermark in generated text, while supported image and file outputs can carry digitally signed provenance ...

Generative AI: a Tool, Not a Shameful Shortcut

In the era of rapid digital transformation, generative AI tools like ChatGPT have emerged as game-changers for content creation. As someone who actively uses such tools to craft insightful articles on emerging technologies and other impactful topics, I’ve encountered both praise for the value of my content and skepticism about the role AI plays in its creation. Through my newsletter, Verbion Pulse , I carefully curate and share ideas that matter, fully embracing AI’s potential. However, the surge in AI-generated content across social media has ignited debates, with some critics arguing that it’s diluting the authenticity of online discourse. Let me make one thing clear: using generative AI to write is not a shortcut to avoid effort; it’s a means to amplify creativity and efficiency. Authors throughout history have relied on editors, researchers, and collaborators to refine and articulate their ideas. Generative AI, in many ways, is just another form of collaboration—one that ha...
